Advent, a joyful anticipation
Advent is a time of joyful anticipation and marks the beginning of the Christian Calendar. Isn’t it strange that our Calendar begins with a time of waiting? What is so great about waiting? No one will deny the numbing agony of queuing at Home Affairs, Pick ‘n Pay, an ATM, or worse, the dentist. Surely, that is wasted time, but how about the moments before opening a birthday present, the day before the first date, the week before your holiday or the time before the scheduled visit from your grandchildren? Indeed, waiting for some things will break you down, while waiting for others will fill you with joy and give you energy. Maybe it is fitting then that our year begins with a period of waiting, and not any kind, but the best kind of waiting: As we wait for the celebration of Christmas, each moment of our lives is a joyful anticipation of Jesus Christ’s return.
But those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength.
They shall go up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not grow weary;
they shall walk and not be faint.
