Hermann and I are relatively new in the congregation. There are members we have met and worked with but wanted to get to know a little better so we invited them to a Monthly Meal in our home in Paarl. Over a lengthy lunch on a public holiday, we started by asking everyone to share something about their background, where they were born, their family’s history and how they landed up in Stellenbosch. And the fascinating, unique and moving stories that were shared became the conversation for the whole afternoon we were together – tales of loving and large families, hardship, adventures, trailblazing forefathers, missionaries and pioneers in South Africa, Germany and Namibia. The idea around the monthly meals is to be lauded and it can really bring us as members of the congregation closer by getting to know the “personalities behind the person you see in church” a lot better.
